Salary transparency in the Netherlands is notoriously poor. Ask someone in Amsterdam what they earn and you will get a polite change of subject. But if you are considering a move here, or negotiating an offer, you need real numbers.

We have pulled together data from Glassdoor, Levels.fyi, PayScale, and community reports to give you the clearest picture we can of what Amsterdam tech roles actually pay in 2026. All figures are gross annual salary in euros.

Salary ranges by role

These ranges reflect what you can realistically expect at Amsterdam-based companies, from funded startups through to large product companies. Outliers at US-headquartered firms like Uber or Booking.com can push significantly higher.

The three tiers of Amsterdam tech pay

Amsterdam tech compensation follows what Gergely Orosz has described as a trimodal pattern. Understanding which tier a company falls into matters more than knowing the average salary for your role.

Tier 1 — Local and traditional companies (€40–70K senior)

Consultancies, agencies, smaller Dutch companies. Salaries are modest, equity is rare, but work-life balance is often excellent. Many of these roles are in Dutch, which limits the pool for expats.

Tier 2 — Scale-ups and European product companies (€65–100K senior)

Companies like Picnic, Catawiki, Mollie, Adyen, MessageBird. Competitive base salaries, sometimes meaningful equity. Most operate primarily in English. This is where the bulk of expat hiring happens.

Tier 3 — Big Tech and US-headquartered companies (€90–180K+ senior)

Uber, Booking.com, Databricks, Elastic, Netflix. Total compensation can reach €150–250K+ for senior and staff roles when you include equity and bonuses. These roles are highly competitive.

The 30% ruling changes everything

If you qualify for the 30% ruling, up to 30% of your gross salary is paid tax-free. On a €80K salary, this can mean roughly €8,000+ more in your pocket each year compared to a local hire on the same gross.

This effectively boosts Amsterdam's competitiveness against cities like Berlin and London. A €80K Amsterdam salary with the 30% ruling can deliver better take-home pay than a €90K Berlin salary without any tax break.

Important: From 2027, the ruling drops to 27% for anyone who started after January 2024. It remains at 30% for those grandfathered in before that date.

How Amsterdam compares

City Senior Engineer (gross) Take-home notes
Amsterdam€70–100KStrong with 30% ruling; competitive without
Berlin€70–95KLower cost of living; no equivalent tax break
London£75–120KHigher gross, but housing costs eat the difference
Remote (EU)€80–130KHighest net if living in a low-cost country

Tips for salary negotiation

  • Always ask about the 30% ruling before discussing numbers. Whether or not you qualify changes the entire calculation.
  • Dutch companies often present a single number. Push back — most have a band. Asking "what is the range for this level?" is culturally acceptable here.
  • Factor in equity carefully. Options at a pre-IPO Dutch startup are worth significantly less on paper than RSUs at Booking.com. Ask about the strike price, vesting schedule, and latest valuation.
  • Holiday allowance (vakantiegeld) is 8% of your gross salary, paid out in May. This is legally mandated and usually on top of the salary figure quoted. Make sure you know whether the number you are discussing includes it or not.
  • Pension contributions vary widely. Some companies contribute 5–8% on top of your salary. Others offer nothing. This is an underrated part of the package.

A note on data quality

Salary data in the Netherlands is imperfect. Glassdoor numbers can be skewed by a small sample size. Levels.fyi leans toward Big Tech. Community reports are self-selected. We have done our best to triangulate across sources, but treat these as informed ranges, not guarantees. Your mileage will depend on the specific company, your negotiation, and whether you qualify for the 30% ruling.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average tech salary in Amsterdam in 2026?

A mid-level software engineer in Amsterdam earns between €50,000 and €65,000 gross per year. Senior engineers earn €65,000–€85,000 at European companies, and up to €180,000+ at Big Tech firms like Uber, Booking.com, and Databricks when equity is included.

How does the 30% ruling affect my salary in Amsterdam?

The 30% ruling allows qualifying expats to receive up to 30% of their gross salary tax-free. On an €80,000 salary, this means roughly €8,000+ more take-home pay per year. From 2027, new applicants (post-January 2024) will receive 27% instead of 30%.

How do Amsterdam tech salaries compare to Berlin and London?

Amsterdam senior engineers earn €70,000–€100,000 gross. Berlin pays €70,000–€95,000 with lower cost of living but no equivalent tax break. London pays £75,000–£120,000 but higher housing costs erode the difference. With the 30% ruling, Amsterdam often delivers better net pay than Berlin.

What are the highest paying tech companies in Amsterdam?

Tier 3 companies — Uber, Booking.com, Databricks, Elastic, and Netflix — pay the highest, with senior total compensation reaching €150,000–€250,000+. Tier 2 scale-ups like Adyen, Mollie, Picnic, and Catawiki offer competitive packages of €65,000–€100,000 for senior roles.

Do Amsterdam tech salaries include holiday allowance?

Holiday allowance (vakantiegeld) of 8% is legally mandated in the Netherlands and is usually paid on top of the quoted salary in May. Always confirm whether a salary offer includes or excludes holiday allowance — it makes a significant difference.
